Nearly 300 tractor-trailer drivers were cited for speeding during a recent three-day period on two interstates in Arkansas.
"There is strong public sentiment that many large trucks are ignoring posted speed limits," says Dan Flowers, director of Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. "The results of this intensified the effort-support the public's perception."
The department says 40 law officers took part in the operation, from Wednesday through Friday, to catch speeding truckers. The officers patrolled Interstate 40 between Little Rock and Memphis, Tenn., and interstate 30 between Little Rock and Texarkana.
During the operation, officers issued 297 speeding tickets. The highest speed cited was 87 mph by a truck on I-40 near West Memphis. Also, several truck drivers were cited for following too closely to other vehicles and for improperly changing lanes.
A new law that increases penalties for speeding trucks goes into effect
this summer. The law imposes an extra fine of $50 for each mile per hour
in excess of 70 mph for which a driver is cited.

Friends,
I wonder how many cars were speeding that didn't get ticketed? Now
is the time to write to Dan Flowers of the Ar. Hwy. & Trans. Dept.
to voice your opinion on the prejudice involved here.
Please send me a copy of your letter for my records.
Thanks!
Sharon/SeaEast/F.R.I.C.
P.S. What are you waiting for...write that letter! *smile*
